English 10
This year, we focus on analysis. We participate in several seminars that encourage intriguing thoughts and ideas regarding texts. The texts chosen correlate with the content of AP Euro, which makes for a deeper understanding. We read and analyze All Quiet on the Western Front, which is about World War I, and various short stories like "Rikki-tikki-tavi" and "The Hanging", which are about British imperialism of India. We also do a couple of group projects. One is poetry analysis on a blog, where we choose current songs and explain how they exemplify the characteristics of romantic poetry. Second, we create a social media account to promote an idea on how to improve social media to more effectively mitigate conflict. We also learn how to write speeches and deliver them. Leading up to this, we improved persuasion skills by writing essays. In the process, we learn how to develop an interesting prompt from a broad topic by doing a brain dump, forming a specialized opinion that is not a commonly held belief, and finding evidence to back it up.
